Topped with a halved banana and more chocolate chips for extra rich flavor, this banana bread is a perfect treat for any occasion, whether it’s a cozy breakfast or a delightful dessert.

Adding chocolate chips to any bread is such a good idea! Some of my favorite banana bread with chocolate chips is this Double Chocolate Banana Bread! Loaded with chocolate chips, it is perfectly moist, intensely chocolatey and has an almost brownie-like texture.

WHY WE LOVE THIS DARK CHOCOLATE CHIP WALNUTS BANANA BREAD

My family really loves this banana bread with dark chocolate chips and chopped walnuts! We usually have ripe bananas at home. When bananas are really ripe and mashed, we all know it’s time to make banana bread. Luckily, my family enjoys making banana bread, especially this quick bread, as it turns out super moist and tender. It has become our go-to treat for banana bread cravings. When I spot my bananas developing tiny black spots, I think, ‘Yay! I can bake delicious banana bread with dark chocolate chips and walnuts soon!’ It’s just that tasty.

WHAT INGREDIENTS DO I NEED?

  • Flour
  • Bananas: You are looking for 4 bananas that are super ripe. The riper they are the sweetest the bread and the bolder of a banana flavor your bread will have. Plus one firm banana, cut in half lengthwise, for extra caramelized banana flavour! (for the top).
  • Butter
  • Eggs
  • Chocolate Chips: I usually reach for dark chocolate, but feel free to use semi-sweet, milk, white or any combination of them.
  • Cinnamon
  • Vanilla extract
  • Salt
  • Walnuts: If you allergic, feel free to skip the walnuts.

PREPARE YOUR PAN

You’ll need a 9×5″ loaf pan for this recipe. Use a heavy duty steel loaf pan. I don’t like glass, which tend to cook too quickly or unevenly. I recommend lining the pan with parchment paper and buttering it or spraying it with nonstick baking spray. Leave a 3 inch overhang to make it easy to pull and lift the banana bread out of the pan.

TIPS FOR THE PERFECT CHOCOLATE WALNUTS BANANA BREAD

  • I strongly suggest weighing your flour! As measuring cups usually pack more flour than what’s called for. And too much flour leads to dry banana bread.
  • Be sure to bring your eggs to room temperature! Cold ingredients don’t bond!
  • Don’t over mix your batter. Blend it just until everything is combined.
  • Preheat your oven at least 30 minutes before you plan on baking!
  • Be sure to use SUPER ripe bananas! And mash the bananas well before adding them to the dry ingredients.
  • Try to use a firm yellow banana for slices on top, if you try to slice a very ripe banana lengthwise it just won’t work.
  • For optimal results, stick to the exact recipe as written! Using coconut oil instead of butter or whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose flour might not yield the desired outcome. Experiment at your own risk.

HOW TO MAKE CHOCOLATE WALNUTS BANANA BREAD?

Here’s a quick overview of the instructions, with the detailed steps provided in the recipe card below.

  1. Good news, no electric mixer is needed for this recipe! Simply coarsely mash the bananas using a fork. Whisk in the melted butter until well combined. Add the eggs, sugar, vanilla extract, and mix until thoroughly combined. Then, whisk together the sifted flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt to combine. Add the flour mixture to the banana mixture and stir to combine using a rubber spatula. Scrape the sides and base of the bowl well to ensure the mixture is uniformly combined. Gently fold in the chocolate chips and walnuts, mixing just until combined.
  2. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and even it out. Then press the remaining halved banana into the top of the bread, cut side up and sprinkle with the reserved chocolate chips.
  3. Bake in the center of the oven for 55 to 60 minutes, then allow it to cool for 15 to 20 minutes. After that, remove the bread from the pan and let it cool on the wire rack until you’re ready to slice and serve. ENJOY!

WHAT DO YOU EAT BANANA BREAD WITH?

Banana Bread is delicious totally on its own, but you can take it to the next level and slather it with butter, organic honey, cream cheese, jam, Nutella, or serve a slice with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

STORING, and FREEZING

  • Storing: For moist banana bread, keep your loaf wrapped tightly in plastic wrap and then stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days at room temperature.
  • Freezing: You can store the whole loaf or slices of this banana bread in the freezer for up to 1 month. Let it cool completely, wrap it tightly in plastic or foil, and label it. Thaw in the refrigerator or at room temperature before serving.

Equipment

  • 9×5" loaf pan

Ingredients

  • 4 ripe bananas, mashed (about 2 cups)
  • 180 g all-purpose flour  sifted (I used unbleached)
  • 80 g unsalted butter  melted
  • 2 large eggs room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup walnuts or pecans coarsely chopped
  • 50 g dark chocolate chips or semi-sweet chopped into small chunks

Topping

  • 1 firm banana plus 1 halved lengthwise banana for decoration
  • 1 tablespoons chocolate chips (some coarsely chopped)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a 9 x 5-inch loaf pan and line it with parchment paper, covering the bottom and the two longest sides of the pan with some overhang (for easy lift it out). Set aside until needed.
  • In a large bowl, coarsely mash the bananas using a fork. Whisk in the melted butter until well combined. Add the eggs, sugar, vanilla extract, and mix until thoroughly combined.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the sifted flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt to combine. Add the flour mixture to the banana mixture and stir to combine using a rubber spatula. Scrape the sides and base of the bowl well to ensure the mixture is uniformly combined. Gently fold in the chocolate chips and walnuts, mixing just until combined.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and even it out. Then press the remaining halved banana into the top of the bread, cut side up and sprinkle with the reserved chocolate chips.
  • Bake in the center of the oven for 55 to 60 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
  • Remove the banana bread from the oven and place on a wire rack to cool for 10 to 15 minutes. Then, remove the bread from the pan and cool on the wire rack until you're ready to slice and serve. Enjoy!

Notes

Loaf pans can very in size. I used a standard metal 9×5″ pan. If yours is smaller or larger or made of glass, the baking time will vary.
